शशि थरूर का कांग्रेस नेतृत्व से नाराज़गी अब खुलकर सामने आ गई है। हाल ही में दिल्ली में राहुल गांधी से मुलाकात के दौरान थरूर ने साफ-साफ पूछ लिया, "पार्टी में मेरी भूमिका क्या है? मुझे करना क्या है?" ये सवाल उनके बढ़ते असंतोष का सबूत है, जो पिछले कुछ समय से पार्टी में उनकी अनदेखी और सीमित भूमिका को लेकर उबल रहा था। 
दरअसल, थरूर लंबे वक्त से महसूस कर रहे हैं कि उनकी काबिलियत का सही इस्तेमाल नहीं हो रहा। चार बार के तिरुवनंतपुरम सांसद और अंतरराष्ट्रीय मंचों पर अपनी पहचान रखने वाले थरूर को लगता है कि उन्हें संसद में बड़ी बहसों में बोलने का मौका नहीं दिया जा रहा। उन्होंने राहुल से ये भी जानना चाहा कि क्या पार्टी उन्हें केरल की राजनीति में फोकस करने को कह रही है, लेकिन राहुल का जवाब अस्पष्ट रहा। राहुल ने बस इतना कहा कि कांग्रेस में चुनाव से पहले मुख्यमंत्री का चेहरा तय करने की परंपरा नहीं है, जिससे थरूर की नाराज़गी और बढ़ गई। 
इस टकराव की जड़ में कई बातें हैं। थरूर ने हाल ही में पीएम मोदी की अमेरिका यात्रा और केरल की एलडीएफ सरकार की औद्योगिक नीतियों की तारीफ की थी, जो कांग्रेस की आधिकारिक लाइन से हटकर था। इससे पार्टी के भीतर उनकी स्थिति पर सवाल उठे। ऊपर से, ऑल इंडिया प्रोफेशनल कांग्रेस जैसे संगठन से उन्हें हटाए जाने का तरीका भी उन्हें नागवार गुज़रा, जिसे उन्होंने खुद बनाया था। 
अब थरूर के इस सवाल— "मैं करूं क्या?"— ने सियासी हलकों में हलचल मचा दी है। कुछ लोग इसे पार्टी छोड़ने की धमकी के तौर पर देख रहे हैं। उन्होंने तो ये भी कहा कि अगर कांग्रेस को उनकी ज़रूरत नहीं, तो उनके पास "दूसरे विकल्प" हैं। क्या वो बीजेपी या किसी और दल की ओर इशारा कर रहे हैं? या फिर ये बस अपनी बात मनवाने की रणनीति है? 
फिलहाल, कांग्रेस के लिए ये headache बढ़ाने वाला मसला है। थरूर जैसे कद्दावर नेता का खुला असंतोष न सिर्फ पार्टी की एकता पर सवाल उठाता है, बल्कि 2026 के केरल विधानसभा चुनावों से पहले भी इसे कमज़ोरी के तौर पर देखा जा सकता है। क्या राहुल इस "भन्नाटे" को शांत कर पाएंगे, या थरूर सचमुच कोई बड़ा कदम उठा लेंगे—ये देखना बाकी है! आप क्या सोचते हैं, थरूर का अगला कदम क्या होगा?

Shashi Tharoor’s frustration with the Congress leadership has now come out in the open. During a recent meeting with Rahul Gandhi in Delhi, Tharoor bluntly asked, “What is my role in the party? What am I supposed to do?” This question is proof of his growing discontent, which has been simmering for some time due to his perceived neglect and limited role within the party.
In fact, Tharoor has long felt that his abilities are not being utilized properly. A four-time MP from Thiruvananthapuram and a figure recognized on international platforms, he believes he isn’t being given opportunities to speak in major parliamentary debates. He also sought clarity from Rahul on whether the party wants him to focus on Kerala politics, but Rahul’s response was vague. Rahul merely said that it’s not the Congress tradition to declare a chief ministerial face before elections, which only deepened Tharoor’s frustration.
The roots of this clash lie in several issues. Recently, Tharoor praised PM Modi’s US visit and the Kerala LDF government’s industrial policies—stances that deviated from the Congress’s official line. This raised questions about his position within the party. On top of that, the manner in which he was removed from the All India Professional Congress—an organization he himself founded—also irked him.
Now, Tharoor’s question—“What am I supposed to do?”—has stirred political circles. Some see it as a veiled threat to leave the party. He even hinted that if Congress doesn’t need him, he has “other options.” Is he pointing toward the BJP or another party? Or is this just a tactic to assert himself?
For now, this is a headache for Congress. The open discontent of a heavyweight like Tharoor not only questions the party’s unity but could also be seen as a weakness ahead of the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections.
